Old Theme LEGO sets I miss a lot ...
I don't know about you, but I miss some old theme LEGO sets a lot. I went back in time and made a list of some of these sets ... and it's a very long list. :) LEGO have released around 25 licensed theme sets since 2000.
My absolute favourites are Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pharaoh's Quest and The Lord of the Rings.
I'm sad that I missed out on some of the old themes as I was not building and collecting LEGO at that time. These sets are much more expensive today in comparison to their release price and they are a very good example of sets that tend to increase in value as time passes.
I prepared for you overview of 13 discontinued LEGO licensed themes with focus on the price appreciation of the first set in each row between now and the release date. The price change is in some cases huge !

It would be so cool, if LEGO brought back those themes again ...
What is your favourite old discontinued LEGO theme ? Are you willing to buy discontinued LEGO sets despite such a high price in some cases ?
I would be pleased if you comment bellow.

Write komentářůI wish I would've gotten some of the Toy Story sets. Unless I win the lottery, though, I'm not going to pay exorbitant prices for any discontinued set. I buy specific pieces from those sets from ebay or Bricklink, but the complete sets are just too expensive. LEGO comes out with too many cool, new sets each year. I cannot go back in time; just get the best sets going forward.
ReplyI would love to own old theme sets too. Toy Story was very nice. But as you said it would cost fortune to buy these sets for today's prices. I also rather buy new LEGO sets for RRP as LEGO has released great sets recently. My favourite 2016 set is definitely Porsche GT3 :) Which one is your favourite ?
ReplyMy brother and I stick to minifig-scale sets, so while I think the Big Ben set and the Porsche set are very cool and impressive, our money and space is reserved for sets that can enhance our town. I guess the Brick Bank is my favorite so far, but we're pretty excited about the Disney Castle.
ReplyYour LEGO town must look great I guess! :)
ReplyYes, Disney Castle looks impressive - it would have been a great set to build and own but the price tag makes the set less affordable for ordinary LEGO collectors. As you were talking about minifig-scale sets, they are big on fun. I especially like the mini sets with just a few pieces and one or two minifigures. They are small but funny and the minifigures themselves have sometimes perfect facial expressions ! :)
Well, since my brother and I are able to split costs, it makes it easier for us to buy an expensive set...if we REALLY like it. We passed on the Ghostbusters HQ, even though we both liked it, because of the cost (and because of all the stickers.) But we've dedicated about a quarter of one of our towns for an amusement park and the Disney Castle was just too perfect to pass up.
ReplyGhostbusters HQ is a very nice set, I enjoy looking at the pictures and videos of it, but to me this isn't the type of set I would have to own. It's not because of the stickers or other small imperfections, but it is just too big for me and I have never been a big fan of Ghostbusters. $350 is a lot but it's definitely worth the money. I'm sure that it will be worth even more in a few years.
