Gandalf Arrives - Set 9469-1

September 04, 2016 5 Comments A+ a-

Lately in my post about old discontinued LEGO themes that I miss a lot I mentioned that Lord of the Rings is one of such themes.

I read The Lord of the Rings book's trilogy including The Hobbit when I was a child. I also saw the famous movie version and I love the scene from the begining of the first book when Gandalf arrives to the Hobbiton to celebrate 111th anniversary of his old friend Bilbo Baggins with the carriage full of firecrackers.
The set Gandalf Arrives perfectly replicates this famous scene.
Gandalf the Grey on his way to Hobbiton
You get 2 minifigures in the set - Gandalf the Grey and Frodo Baggins. Also you get a brown horse with movable legs and head and the carriage, of course.

Gandalf arrives and disrupts the calm lifestyle of local hobits. On his way he also meets young Frodo Baggins and this is where the whole story begins.
Frodo Baggins
Gandalf journey to Hobbiton was definitely long and full of pitfalls. But he is a magician ! So he can handle easily almost everything. Stuck carriage wheel is definitely no problem for him.

No doubt that he would not manage to arrive to the Hobbiton and handle an important message for the Baggins.

But Gandalf is always on the go. He didn't stay for a long in the quiet Hobbiton because he strives to take care of a peace in the Middle Earth.

I'm very happy that I came accross an advertisement for this set last week. Although I bought it for $29, which is twice as expensive as the original RRP, I believe that it was still reasonable price compared to for what it is sometimes sold on Ebay. Moreover, I am sure that this set will retain or even further increase in its value because it's a first set in row from The Lord of the Rings theme and such sets are always popular among LEGO collectors.

Even thought I managed to build it in just a few minutes I enjoyed it a lot. :)

Do you own some old Lord of the Rings theme sets ? And are you also a fan of this theme ?

I will be happy if you comment below.

Hello there,

I enjoyed the photographs you've included in this great post. The scenery is beautiful.

I'm fortunate to have Gandalf Arrives in my collection. The set is an elegant recreation of an unforgettable scene. It also complements An Unexpected Gathering, set 79003 from The Hobbit theme.

Along with the previously mentuoned sets, I have Frodo with Cooking Corner polybag, Uruk-hai Army, Attack on Weathertop, The Battle of Helm's Deep, and The Tower of Orthanc. I do not yet have a Gollum minigigure, so Riddles for The Ring is high on my Wanted List. Legolas would be nice to have, too.

Oops, spelling..."mentioned", not "mentuoned"...

Not a Hobbit/LOTR fan, but that's a pretty cool set. That theme pre-dates my re-interest in LEGO, but $30 doesn't seem too bad to me. I've paid more for less; I'm sure.

Hello Eric, thank you a lot for your comment. I took these pictures during our weekend trip to the beautiful Moravia, where all beatiful vineyards are. :)
What a great collection of Lord of the RIngs theme you have ! These sets are not as cheery as the Gandalf Arrives set is but I wish I had them in my collection too. I especially like the Attack on Weathertop and Tower of Orthanc, of course. :)
Gollum is one of the main characters in the Lord of the Rings and it's a shame that he is so rare. To my knowledge, he is exclusive to only two sets - 9470 Shelob Attacks and 79000 Riddles for the Ring. In the movie I prefer the latter, but in speaking about LEGO sets my favourite is Shelob Attacks.

... Speaking the paying more for less I know exactly what you are talking about. :) Couple of weeks ago I bought the Creator set Park Animals in my local toystore (I know that it's a bit childish set but I couldn't resist myself because it's so cute) and two days later it was on sale for 50% of what I paid for it. :-/
