Set 10252 - LEGO VW Beetle - Fairytale review :)

Did you hear the story of a man who loved his car like anything else ? :)
Once upon a time, in early 70's, there used to live a very successful young man. In his early twenties, he's got everything he could ever want.
A beautiful wife,
a beautiful house,
and, of course, a beautiful car.
Every morning he was proudly driving his car to his job.
Also in the morning of January 11, 1974, when one of the worst market downturns hit all major stock markets in the world, he lost not only his job but also almost all of his savings.
And world went to recession in 1974. They had to sell everything they had ...
Except for one thing that he refused to sell, his lovely car. He loved his car so much that he persuaded his wife to first sell the house and then live in the car.
Of course, it was not a sustainable situation ! After a few days, his wife came up with a clear asking: "Either me or the car ?!?"
There was no way but to sell the car. So he worn black and took his car to the nearest car dealer.
For money he got he bought fly tickets for his wife and him and left to start a new life somewhere else.
Very soon he found a new job, his wife gave him a baby and their life begun returning back to normal. He soon earned money to buy a new house for his family. But he had never bought a new car. He rather rode the bus to his work.
His son loved the story about father's old lovely car.
He and his wife was getting older and older and their son was growing up into a very strong and successful young man, exactly like his father. And because his son used to know how much his father loved his old car he decided to find it for him ! He started searching the internet for the car ! AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, he found it, he bought it and gave it to his father as a Christmas Gift. :-)
And he was so happy that he could drive his lovely car again !

Lovely car ! Did you build the VW Beetle, too ? :-)

I will be very happy if you let me know in comments bellow.

It's easier to live in your car when it's the size of a house.
Love the set, but since it's not Minifig-scale, I didn't even consider it. As much as I appreciate these kinds of LEGO sets, I can't buy all of them, so I limit myself to Minifig-scale sets, as that's what goes into our LEGO town.

Yes, it's not a minifig scale model. You can fit the minifig inside the car but when it stands next to it you can clearly see that the car is over sized for minifigs. :-)
I've recently found out that this is not the first VW Beetle made by LEGO, in 2008 they came up with a replica of 1960 Beetle - set 10187 which is not that ultra detailed set as the 10252, but looks very nice. And today, it's already a very rare set.

This is such a great looking set. I love the colors and accessories. How did you enjoy the build? Fun? Difficult? Favorite part?

I've read that there are some interesting techniques the designer used to get the shape of the Beetle. I have the set, but have yet to open it. I think the summer will be a great time to build!

Yes, it is looking so good and the curves are really nice ! :-) I cannot remember another LEGO I have seen in this shade of blue, can you ? And I think that the colour fits perfectly with this model, even though it is so unusual.
I am sure that I will remember this build for a long time because it was the first car I've ever built from LEGO ! :-) And, honestly, I was not too impressed at the beginning because I started with the most technical part of the set and as I'm not a big fan of cars and I don't know almost anything about them I didn't even know what I was building. :-) However, everything changed when I started to build the curves of the car and the interior. Since then I've started to enjoy the build a lot. :-)
And it's so cool to play with the car once the build is finished ! :-) The shame is that the car goes only forward and you cannot control it by the driving wheel. It would be much more fun ! :-)
I think that overall this set exceeded my expectations. ;-)

Thank you very much for giving your impression of the build and the set as a whole. I thought 10241 Maersk Line Triple-E was the same shade of blue, but it turns out it's not. So no, I can't think of another set with Dark Azure being the dominant color.

That's funny you mention that, at first, you didn't know what you were building. I've read similar comments from other builders. I can't wait to experience the same feeling!

Working steering would definitely be a nice feature. I'm sure if you ever wanted to take on the challenge, you would succeed. And that's what's so great about LEGO. It's just natural (and encouraged) to modify a set!

It would be definitely a big challenge for me ! :-)
Yes, the Maersk Line Triple-E is a very good example of a set with similar blue. However, as you say, it is a bit different blue - lighter and not that intense. I saw the Maersk last week on my own when I was in the largest private LEGO museum, which coincidently happens to be set in Prague ! :-) I saw even the predecessor of the 10252 VW Beetle, the 10187. I have to share a few pictures with you in upcoming posts. :-)
I'm sure that you will like the set ! :-) The interior of the car is very cool too.

Nice fairytale review which I enjoyed to read! :-)

The 10252 VW Beetle is a wonderful addition to my collection of LEGO Creator Expert vehicles, including the VW T1 Camper Van, the Mini Cooper, the Ferrari F40 and soon the Lego Ideas Caterham Seven.

Thank you very much, Hayo, for your comment ! :-) That's a very cool collection of cars you have. I have the VW T1 too still unopened and wondering about the Caterham Seven. :-) I saw the Caterham built in the LEGO store in Budapest and it made me think about buying it because it looks very detailed and authentic.
